3 Questions For Creating Jesus Centered Sermons

Great sermons don’t result in the audience saying, “Wow, the preacher is awesome”, but “Wow, Jesus is awesome!” We want to lead people to Jesus. To do this, we need sermons that point to Jesus. Here are three questions that can help us preach sermons that are Jesus centered.

1. What did you discover about Jesus that inspired you; something you can’t wait to share in this sermon?

We want our audience to be excited to learn about Jesus and that starts with us. Preachers can study the Bible to merely make their next sermon, or study the Bible to pursue Jesus. Great sermons are the byproduct of pursuing Jesus. Coach Vince Lombardi said, “If you aren’t fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm.” Even if you’ve been preaching for fifty years, there’s more of Jesus to discover. In Jesus “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3 (NIV). Let’s be examples of passionately pursuing Jesus.

2. How is Jesus a powerful example of the sermon’s application?

People praise Jesus when they see his humility, not because they are told to be humble. Jesus inspires people by his example. Jesus said, “Follow me”. This means he lead the way. He was willing to be the example to follow. Jesus didn’t just say, “Love your enemies” and “forgive them”, he went to a cross and became an example of loving enemies and praying for their pardon. He doesn’t ask us to do things he isn’t willing to do himself. We love, because he first loved us. Let’s show how Jesus is a powerful example of the sermon’s application and watch the audience be inspired to follow him.

Ephesians 4:32 - 5:2 (NIV) [32] Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. [1] Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children [2] and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3. What attribute of Jesus will this sermon highlight?

There are many attributes of Jesus to focus on; his wisdom, kindness, compassion, zeal, sacrificial love, patience, humility, holiness, justice, mercy, grace, power, healing, sincerity, powerful teaching, forgiveness, generosity, gratitude, or courage to name a few.

Jesus’ accomplishments are remarkable. Jesus paid the price of our sin, conquered death and gave us eternal life. His accomplishments are so remarkable, we can overlook something else remarkable, WHO HE IS.

It takes time and meditation to answer these three questions, but sharing something that truly inspires you about Jesus and hearing people say, “Wow! Jesus is awesome!” is a rewarding experience.
